Home Is a Great Place!
Dear Friends,
Sam has been home now for exactly one week. He is still thrilled to be home, happy with his own room, and even tolerant of the siblings infringing on his space! As far as healing, yesterday Sam got a great report from his Occupational Therapist, Carla Austin. She said that the new back “hardware” has so improved his range of motion that he can use both arms farther than before and now both inward and outward. He also did not tire as quickly because he did not have to work so hard just to sit up! We are all impressed!
Sam just returned from his first jaunt around the neighborhood. His nurse, Elma, said that when she asked if Sam was ready to return home, he got so upset he cried crocodile tears. The tears were quickly replaced by a toothy grin when she said they could stay out a while longer. He is really doing well!
Last Friday we had our check up with the surgeon: Dr. Bobechko said Sam’s back looks great overall. However, there are three separations in his lower back that have become infected with a common bacteria, pseudemonus. It is common, but prolific, and somewhat resistant. So we started a new regimen of more frequent dressing changes and three times a day antibiotic on the infected areas. We are to call the doctor today and report on progress, but so far it does not look improved.
Overall, Sam is doing very well. We are still weaning him off of the Tylenol with Codeine. He occasionally requires oxygen to maintain his oxygen saturation levels. His activity level and ability to be upright in his chair seems to improve every day. Honestly, we are quite surprised at the rapid progress he is making. We believed he would still be in the hospital, but he is coming along so quickly that he will soon be recovered! It is inspiring to watch and is yet another testimony to the strong spirit of our son.
Thank you all for your continued interest and prayers! We are almost there!!
Love,
David & Kelly
